The pea puffer is classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss and overharvesting for the aquarium trade. Overall, it has been estimated that the species declined by 30–40% from 2005 to 2015, and their numbers in the wild have been declining quickly ever since. 

Breeding freshwater dwarf pea puffer fish - In North East Victoria, Australia. With our large scale breeding project at the Puffer Farm, we are the very first puffer breeding farm in the world, bringing captive bred puffers to the Aquarium Industry.
